Wiesław Wałkuski (born 1956) is one of Poland’s most celebrated contemporary poster artists, renowned for his hauntingly surreal visual language and masterful fusion of painting and graphic design. Born in Białystok, Poland, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw from 1976 to 1981, where he specialized in painting under Professor Teresa Pągowska and graphic design under the legendary Professor Maciej Urbaniec.

Following his graduation, Wałkuski collaborated with numerous Warsaw-based publishing houses, theatres, and the film distributors Polfilm and Film Polski, creating memorable posters for theatrical performances, films, and cultural events. Since establishing himself as an independent artist in 1987, he has designed more than 250 internationally acclaimed posters while continuing to pursue painting as the foundation of his artistic practice. His distinctive style—marked by dreamlike symbolism, psychological depth, and meticulous classical oil painting techniques—has made him one of the most influential figures in contemporary poster art.

Wałkuski’s work has received widespread international recognition, earning prestigious awards including the Hollywood Reporter Key Art Awards in Los Angeles, prizes at the Chicago International Film Festival, the International Poster Biennale in Mexico, the Art Directors Club of New York, the Polish Poster Biennale, and numerous international poster and theatre competitions throughout Europe. His posters have become iconic examples of the Polish School of Poster, admired for their poetic narratives, theatrical atmosphere, and extraordinary craftsmanship.

In addition to his poster design, Wałkuski has devoted much of his career to oil painting, creating enigmatic and emotionally charged works that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. His paintings and posters have been exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions around the world and are held in prestigious museum and private collections across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Today, Wiesław Wałkuski continues to live and work in Warsaw, where he remains one of the world’s foremost masters of the artistic poster.
